Explaining the Pros and the Cons of Taking a Year Off-after High school and before University
1. There will be opportunities to experience another culture in the purest form by being a part of it.
2. You’ll have the chance to see new things in new countries and bring back some awesome memories.
3. Your language skills will take a massive step forwards.
4. Time out from work or studies will recharge your batteries.
5. There are opportunities closer to home as well as far away in places you’ve never heard of.
6. You can improve your employment potential in the long-term.
7. There may be further education opportunities around the world in the future.
8. More institutions are offering financial incentives in the form of grants and credit towards
tuition for students who take a gap year.
9. Work experience (as well as volunteer and goodwill projects) are great résumé builders
and can result in meaningful learning experiences.
1. There is the potential that things might not go to plan.
2. Not researching organisations sufficiently may end up costing you a stack of cash with little valuable experience to show in return.
3. It can be an expensive way of avoiding things at home.
4. You may find it stressful away from friends and family, especially at certain times.
5. Failing to plan properly may leave you with more negative than positive experiences.
6. Returning to too much debt may spoil plans for returning to college or university.
7. After having the time of your life it may be hard to settle back into life at home.
8. For students who fail to develop important work habits, it is easy to lose focus and “fall
out” of the academic routine.
9. Watching friends and classmates move on to college before you do can be upsetting.
