Pros & Cons of English as the Official Language of the U.S.A.

Should English be the official language of the U.S.A.? What are the advantages and disadvantages? These are the Level 6 ESL (MiraCosta College) ideas on this topic.
1. Cost - no need to pay for tanslators or interpreters
2. Fewer communication problems if everyone uses the same language
3. Better job options for immigrants if they speak Engish well
4. Immigrants will assimilate to the system faster
5. Better national unity
6. Faster communication if everyone uses the same langauge
7. This would only apply to the federal government
8. Fewer racial problems
1. Translators and interpreters will lose work
2. Immigrants could get discouraged
3. Communication difficulties and problems for nonnative English speakers
4. Discrimination against people who don't speak English well
5. Two or more languages are better than one
6. The U.S. would not be so interesting
7. Serious losses could occur (someone accused of a crime may not understand in court, for example)
