Pros & Cons of Applying Early Decision to Yale
Created by anonymous on 07/31/2010
I MEAN COLUMBIA! NOT YALE! YALE DOESN"T HAVE AN EARLY DECISION PROGRAM! If it did this problem would be settled, lol.
I want to apply early to one of: Columbia, Stanford, Yale, or Brown
1. Free admission to over 30 museums, discounted and/or free tickets to operas and Broadway shows, and restaurant offers at over 30 restaurants
2. First consideration for countless internships in the Caput Mundi, given
3. I've always wanted to live in New York, and attending Columbia would help me realize that dream, and allow me to experience a part of the world, that being the East Coast, that I've never been exposed to
4. Columbia is immensely diverse, with 1/5 of students identifying as Latino, another fifth as Asian, another fifth Black, and the remaining 2/5 being White. Also, nearly 1/5 of Columbians are Pell Grant recipients, more than both Stanford and Yale
5. Columbians don't care much for athletics as opposed to those at say, Stanford
6. NYC's inexpensive, efficient subway system makes car payments, insurance, gas, etc. unnecessary, freeing up more cash
7. Between the New York Public Library and the Columbia's library system, I would have far more books than I would have time to read
8. Columbians are liberal activists, my kinda people!
9. Proximity to the beach, Six Flags, Coney Island, and all of the other fabulously unique and exciting things to do in the Caput Mundi
10. Because of Columbia's emphasis on diversity, and my first-generation college student, Mexican-American heritage, my chances of admission there are much greater than at Yale or Stanford, although my odds are still greater at Brown
1. Columbia is less prestigious than Yale or Stanford, but I suppose that the difference is marginal
2. NYC's cost of living may force me to find innovative ways to earn a living
3. New York's climate, as opposed to that of the Bay Area, would allow my skin to heal from the harsh sun of Phoenix
4. Columbia has less of an undergraduate emphasis than Yale or Stanford; in fact, not all instructors have Ph.D.s
5. Columbia's Core Curriculum would restrict my academic experience, as opposed to the Open Curriculum of Brown
6. The weather will take some getting used to
7. Columbia lacks a residential college system like Yale, and the campus is possibly less social than Stanford and Yale
8. Advising won't be as great as at Stanford or Yale, and the bureaucracy is slower and more annoying
9. If I were to be admitted to Columbia through its Early Decision program, I'd never know if I could've gotten into Yale or Stanford, although I doubt that I have the sort of resume necessary to get into Yale or Stanford
